Microsoft, which is known for products like Office 365, published a public beta of the OneDrive sync application for macOS with native support for the Apple Silicon platform in December 2021. 3 months later, the corporation has finally released the upgrade to all Mac users, who can now enjoy OneDrive operating natively on the M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max CPUs.
According to a Microsoft employee, OneDrive sync for Apple Silicon is now accessible on “GA,” which the corporation refers to as software that is available to all. Version 22.022 of OneDrive for macOS includes native support for the Apple Silicon platform. People may verify if they have the most recent version of the software downloaded by going to the OneDrive settings page.
We’re pleased to confirm that OneDrive sync for macOS will now function natively on Apple silicon. This implies that OneDrive will fully benefit from Apple’s silicon performance advancements. We realize it has been a long-awaited and much-requested functionality, and we’re excited to make it broadly accessible beginning with version 22.022.
Applications that have been upgraded to operate natively on Apple Silicon chips may fully utilize the ARM architecture, which provides increased performance and efficiency. This suggests that the software will consume less energy, leading to longer battery life for MacBook users.
However, Microsoft is not the only corporation that has been sluggish to adopt its cloud service so it can function natively on M1. Dropbox made a test version of its macOS application with Apple Silicon compatibility accessible earlier in 2022, but it’s yet to be publicly disclosed. Google Drive was to be upgraded with M1 functionality in October last year.
In a similar development, the company has published a new beta version of OneDrive for macOS, which enables people to migrate their Desktop and Documents files to the corporation’s cloud service. More information is available on the official OneDrive blog.
